#05NR12 - U.S. Senate Passes Highway Bill
The United States Senate passed a sweeping Highway Bill (HR 3) earlier today by an 89 to 11 vote. This legislation spends $295 billion dollars over the next five years. The measure also includes the Motorcycle Riders Foundation's (MRF) safety grant program. "The U.S. Senate recognized the needs of the motorcycling community and reacted by including an important national grant program." Said Jeff Hennie, MRF Vice-President of Government Relations.
The U.S. House of Representatives passed a similar spending package last March. The House and Senate will now decide upon the make-up of a conference committee to address the differences between the House and Senate versions of HR 3. The MRF will continue to monitor the highway legislation, and post a list of conference committee members.
Current funding expires at the end of this month. Lawmakers continue to stand by their commitment to complete work on the Highway Bill prior to the expiration of the current extension.
