#03NR36 - URGENT MRF CALL TO ACTION!!!

YOUR CONGRESSMAN HAS TWO MORE DAYS TO HELP MAKE MOTORCYCLE SAFETY HISTORY!

U.S. Representatives Steve LaTourette (R-Ohio) and Pete DeFazio (D-Oregon) have decided that they will mail their "Dear Colleague" letter on Friday, October 31, 2003. This is the letter that urges Congress to adopt the heart and soul of the joint MRF-SMRO agenda in any reauthorization of TEA-21.

That means you have Wednesday and Thursday of this week to convince your U.S. Representative to sign on - and make motorcycle safety history.

The LaTourette-DeFazio Motorcycle Safety Initiative safeguards the advances of the original TEA-21 such as motorcycle access to highways. In addition, it makes the following improvements: sets crash prevention as the priority focus for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) motorcycle safety efforts; establishes a Motorcyclist Advisory Council in the Federal Highway Administration to work the road hazard issue; creates the first-ever federal motorcycle safety incentive grant to encourage and assist states in delivering rider skill training and boost motorist awareness; and tightens the already existing provision barring NHTSA from lobbying the states using taxpayer dollars.

Signing the LaTourette-DeFazio Safety Initiative merely signals your Congressman's support for our motorcycle safety initiative. It does not signal a position on any omnibus TEA-21 legislation that, at present, the MRF and SMROs are in the process of reviewing.

You can view the "Dear Colleague" letter by visiting the MRF's website at http://www.mrf.org/pp_arc7-25-03.php. Call your U.S. Representative at 202-224-3121 or find his/her email address at www.house.gov.

Either way, you've got TWO DAYS to make motorcycle safety history. Together, we can prevent accidents, thwart injuries and save lives! Get your Congressman on board today!
