Congressional Inquiry sent to DOT Secretary Rodney Slater

Nineteen members of Congress have signed a letter to Department of Transportation Secretary, Rodney Slater. As a special request from ABATE of Illinois, Congressman John Shimkus (R-IL) has authored a letter signed by eighteen of his congressional colleagues. The letter was circulated by the Motorcycle Riders Foundation and the American Motorcyclist Association to selected members of the House to obtain the signatures.

The letter to Secretary Slater asks him to stop the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration from further distribution or reproduction of the lobbying video "Without Helmet Laws We All Pay the Price". Steve Zimmer Vice President of Government Relations said, "To continue to distribute the video or to replenish the stock is utilizing federal funds for the express purpose of lobbying, which is prohibited in TEA-21. We expect the department to take a stance and once and for all restrict NHTSA's lobbying". The letter also addresses NHTSA's recent appearances before state legislative committees in Nevada, Massachusetts, and Maryland. Congressman Shimkus specifically objected to the NHTSA officials "providing opinionated testimony".

Signatures on the letter include those of the following members of Congress; Martin Frost (D-TX), Jerry Weller (R-IL.), Phil Crane (R-IL), Donald Manzullo (R-IL), Jerry Costello (D-IL), Ray LaHood (R-IL), James Traficant (D-OH), Bob Ney (R-OH), Rick Hill (R-MT), Walter Jones (R-NC), Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ), Frank Lucas (R-OK), John Shadegg (R-AZ), Steve Chabot (R-OH), Mark Green (R-WI), Mark Souder (R-IN), Leonard Boswell (D-IA), and Kevin Brady (R-TX).
